Guest Blog Post: Think Beyond the Stamp by Dina Wakley

dina_blogheader

Hi, Dina Wakley here...I'm excited to have a guest post on the Ranger blog. I am thrilled to be part of the Ranger family.

I love to use artsy faces in my work. I always say there's something satisfying about creating something that looks back at you. I created three stamp sets of my favorite artsy faces: Scribbly Women, Face in the Crowd, and All the Gals. All the Gals has the faces from both of the larger sets, shrunk down to a smaller size that is ideal for cards and other small mixed-media projects.

One thing I encourage students to do in my classes is to think beyond the stamp. For example, even though an artsy woman stamp has short hair, you can give her long hair with just a few strokes of a pencil. You can even change the shape of her eyes, give her a Frida-like unibrow, or even change her expression. You can alter and tweak the stamped image any way you want. I like to think of the stamps as paper dolls. You can create simple dresses or outfits for them to wear, or even create a ballgown! How about making them into mermaids? If you think out of the box, you will get excited about all of the creative possibilities.

On this journal page, I stamped one of the women from the Scribbly Women set. Then I used a pencil to change her hair from long to short. I colored in the stamped image with water-soluble crayons and my Dina Wakley Line acrylic paints. Her dress is a piece of art I made that didn't work at all, so I cut it up and it made the perfect outfit.

On this journal page, I stamped one of the women from Face in the Crowd. I decided I wanted her hair to be long and flowy, so I drew it in and painted it with Dina Wakley Media Lemon paint.

How are you going to think beyond the stamp with these images? I can't wait to see what you create.
